Check Your Posts For Spam

August 16, 2010 in RokTabs

We have now updated security on Registrations and Comments to stop Spammer attacks by ‘bots’.

THE PROBLEM

Over the last few months there have been attacks by spammers on many blogs worldwide, including ours. This has resulted in this blog platform being closed for a week whilst our hosting company cleaned out the spam some of which contained spam-bots which had malicious code attached.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE

We have taken extra security measures, including implementing Akismet spam protection on all blogs. We ask you though to check for comments on your blogs regularly and delete those that are spam. Unfortunately in order to remove the spam bots it was necessary to remove all comments as they were in amongst 600,000 comments on over 500 blogs. All your blog posts are still there though.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

We strongly recommend that in your Settings > Discussion > Default article settings, uncheck the box for Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks). This means that spammers searching for words like drugs in your posts will not find them.

We strongly recommend that in your Settings > Discussion > Other Comment Settings, check the box for Users must be registered and logged in to comment. This means random spammers cannot just arrive at your blog and leave spam comments. We ask you also though to check for comments on your blogs regularly and MARK AS SPAM any that are spam, so they are less likely to return.

We recommend that in your Settings > Discussion > Email Me Whenever, check the box for Anyone posts a comment

We recommend that in your Settings > Discussion > Before A Comment Appears, check the box for An administrator must always approve the comment.

These measures will help to ensure you do not get unwanted spam comments in your blog posts.

WHAT WE WILL NOW DO

We will continue to implement additional security measures to protect this blogging platform. Whilst this process is ongoing you may continue to post your blogs and comment on others blogs.
