With the data for the bearings, I now had to export to excel and analyse.

The extra data has confirmed my previous conclusions that there is a the Golgi has a bias towards the leading edge – showing cell polarity.

With all the images taken for the third embryo on the confocal, it was now back to Volocity (a computer programme). I analysed each image taken of the sections of the palate ranging from anterior to posterior. I […]

ThumbnailBack after the bank holiday, I was booked in for the confocal for the whole day. Eleni helped me to image palates for a third embryo. It was really interesting and amazing how the confocal worked with lasers to […]

  • The confocal was booked early for a couple of hours again. This time, with cranked up the laser, to produce clearer images. Four more images were produced, so five in total so far.

After the session, I began to […]

  • I completed my analysis of the bearing of the Golgi body for embryo A and B including placing them in zones. There has been a clear relationship, showing that developing palatal cells have cell polarity, with the […]

  • I continued to update my project with difficulties  had encountered. I also met with Jeremy, my supervisor, before he left to go on holiday.

Eleni helped me to prepare the third specimen, preparing the sections […]

  • I made radar plots of the data and made sure that a bearing between the golgi and nucleus of 180 = the direction of growth. I also drew up an outline for the project.

In the afternoon, I washed slide […]

  • Monday’s generally begin with a lab meeting, where we dicussed how everyone’s project was moving along. I met with my supervisor to clarify some data and on the my overall project. I continued to collate the data […]

After sorting out data on excel, I got to do some lab work using the Cryostat. The cryostat cuts frozen sections. I cut 30micron section of E13.5 mouse palates, I managed to get good sections but the centre of the […]

I started by following Carly to help her extract mouse embryos at E13.5, it was fascinating how each embryo has their own sac, but all are joined together in a line looking much like beads. I further worked on my […]

The day started with my lab safety training, where there were several others – mostly Romanian students. I then took my data that I had presented and showed it to Jeremy. There is no obvious relationship between […]

  • When I got in to the post-grad office, I went over a few things I did in the previous week and then it was off to a lab meeting. Six of us met in Jeremy’s office where we discussed what we were all doing in the […]

I continued accurately drawing lines between the golgi and nucleus of cells and finished! I read through some papers that studied the growth of cells in limbs focusing on polarity of golgi and cell division. I […]

So today, I was still drawing lines between the golgi body and nucleus on the computer – tedious! I noticed some problems with the images, not all cells appear to have a golgi when they should, sometimes it […]

I decided to begin the day by researching into cleft lip and palate to put into my introduction. I also looked into the anatomy of the mouse, to get the bigger picture of the close-up images I was looking at.

    I […]

Arriving to my new placement was very daunting, I travelled up to London Bridge station and from there I walked to Guy’s Hospital. The Craniofacial department where I am working is on the 27th floor, with amazing […]

  • After two weeks to off for my exams, I returned to Merton Mencap’s Saturday club on the 26/05/12. We set off on a trip to Birdworld with the older group in the school’s minibus. Including me there were four carers […]

  • I was so happy to begin volunteering, after the long process of CRB checks, meetings and training. Every Saturday, there is a club for age groups that rotate on a three-week basis.

On my first week, there were […]
