1. Stellite 7, 8, 21, 37, 208, 250 and 251

Reinforced with elements such as molybdenum, nickel and niobium, these seven alloys are all low carbon alloys. Although their room temperature hardness is low, it will be improved after cooling, and it has extremely high temperature corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, high temperature strength and best ductility. Commonly used in gas turbine blades, brass molds and extrusion dies, Stellite 208 is specifically designed for forging dies, Stellite 250 and 251 are used exclusively for various parts in the furnace.

2.Stellite Alloy 6 , 306, 506

These alloys have moderate carbon content (0.5%~1.6%) and are less ductile than stellite 7, 8 and 31. They are generally 1% at room temperature and have a slightly higher hardness (HRC 43), but they have good wear resistance and high temperature resistance. These alloys are used as castings and also have thermal shock resistance. Therefore, they can not only be used as sealing surfaces for steam valves and chemical valves but also parts for contact with hot steel and hot scissors. Stellite 306 is a cobalt-based tube wire commonly used to repair hard-faced coatings on parts subject to thermal shock and mechanical shock. Stellite Alloy consist of complex carbides in an alloy matrix. Their exceptional wear resistance is due mainly to the unique inherent characteristics of the hard carbide phase dispersed in a CoCr alloy matrix.

Stellite 12 can be considered as an intermediate alloy between Stellite 6 and Stellite 1. It contains a higher proportion of hard brittle carbides than Stellite6 and has enhanced resistance to low angle erosion, wear and severe sliding wear while maintaining reasonable impact and cavitation resistance. Stellite 12 is typically used to self-fit or run Stellite 6 or Stellite 1. Higher tungsten content provides better high temperature performance than Stellite 6, and can be used at temperatures up to about 700˚C.

Stellite 12 is typically used in cutting tools that need to withstand wear, heat and corrosion. Examples include industrial knives for cutting carpets, plastics, paper and synthetic fibers; and see the skills of the wood industry. It is also used in the beverage industry’s control panels, pump blades, bearing bushings and narrow neck glass mold plungers; and for surface hardening of engine valves, pinch rolls and rotor blade edges in the metalworking industry. Corrosion resistance The typical electrode potential in seawater at room temperature is approximately -0.3 V (SCE). Like stainless steel, Stellite 12 is primarily corroded by pitting mechanisms, rather than by general mass loss in seawater and chloride solutions.

Stellite Alloy 3 is a family of completely non-magnetic and corrosion-resistant cobalt alloys of various compositions that have been optimised for different uses. The Difference Between Cobalt Alloy And Nickel Alloy.

1.Thermal stability

One of the important reasons why cobalt alloys are used as aviation material is its excellent thermal stability. Cobalt alloys have a high melting point and thermal conductivity and less thermal expansion after heating. It can be seen from this that cobalt alloys have advantages in thermal stability.

Compared with cobalt alloys, nickel alloys have a higher strength but more brittle. It is easier to be broken on occasions of impact. When the temperature rises to 800℃ (the operating temperature of some engines), nickel alloys can’t be used, while cobalt alloys retain strong.


The stiffness means the ability to resist deformation. Nickel alloys have a lower stiffness than cobalt alloys in various temperature. With the temperatures above 700℃, the properties of nickel alloys are completely destroyed.

3.Oxidation resistance

Cobalt Chromium Alloy has superior resistance to high-temperature oxidation. Cobalt alloys have excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation and can be used in the case of 800℃.

4.Corrosion Resistance

Corrosion resistance of both alloys was tested as follows. With 4 m/s rate, combustion air containing 5-5 or 5-6 sea salt, NO. 2 fuel oil (0.3% ~ 0.45% sulfur ), and air – oil ratio for 30:1, the sample was rotated cooled from 800℃ to 260 ℃with cold air every an hour. This dynamic hot corrosion test after the cycle test for 200 hours in the combustion apparatus shows that metal loss portion of the cobalt alloys is significantly lower than that of nickel alloys.

In conclusion, the performance of Cobalt Chrome Alloy is much better than nickel alloys, ensuring the use and life of the products. Cobalt alloys have the following advantages: Above all, the hardness of the cobalt alloys are much lower than that of turbine rotors, which makes it safer. In addition, cobalt alloys have a higher melting point and thermal conductivity, and the amount of thermal expansion after heating is small. It has an advantage in thermal stability. What’s more, the strength of the cobalt alloys are slightly lower at normal temperature, but the elongation is higher. Last, cobalt alloys have excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation and can be continuously used in an environment of about 800℃. The corrosion resistance of cobalt alloys is much better than that of nickel alloys as well.
