Cobalt Chrome Alloy is a cobalt-based alloy with a higher density than stainless steel. It is resistant to corrosion, abrasion and heat. It combines good mechanical properties with excellent tribological properties. The Difference Between Cobalt Alloy And Nickel Alloy.

1.Thermal stability

One of the important reasons why cobalt alloys are used as aviation material is its excellent thermal stability. Cobalt alloys have a high melting point and thermal conductivity and less thermal expansion after heating. It can be seen from this that cobalt alloys have advantages in thermal stability.

Compared with cobalt alloys, nickel alloys have a higher strength but more brittle. It is easier to be broken on occasions of impact. When the temperature rises to 800℃ (the operating temperature of some engines), nickel alloys can’t be used, while cobalt alloys retain strong.

2.Stiffness

The stiffness means the ability to resist deformation. Nickel alloys have a lower stiffness than cobalt alloys in various temperature. With the temperatures above 700℃, the properties of nickel alloys are completely destroyed.

3.Oxidation resistance

Cobalt Chromium Alloy has superior resistance to high-temperature oxidation. Cobalt alloys have excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation and can be used in the case of 800℃.

4.Corrosion Resistance

Corrosion resistance of both alloys was tested as follows. With 4 m/s rate, combustion air containing 5-5 or 5-6 sea salt, NO. 2 fuel oil (0.3% ~ 0.45% sulfur ), and air – oil ratio for 30:1, the sample was rotated cooled from 800℃ to 260 ℃with cold air every an hour. This dynamic hot corrosion test after the cycle test for 200 hours in the combustion apparatus shows that metal loss portion of the cobalt alloys is significantly lower than that of nickel alloys.

Cobalt alloys have the following advantages: Above all, the hardness of the cobalt alloys are much lower than that of turbine rotors, which makes it safer. Cobalt metal is mainly used to make alloys. Cobalt Alloy is the general name of one or more alloys made of cobalt and chromium, tungsten, iron and nickel. A tool containing cobalt can significantly improve the performance of wear resistance and cutting of steel. As an important material for cutting tools containing gold and aluminum, stellite alloys containing more than 50% cobalt won’t lose their original hardness even if heated to 1000℃. Cobalt combines the carbide grains of other metals in the alloy composition to make the alloy more ductile and less sensitive to impact. This alloy is welded on the surface of parts, which can increase the life of parts by 3-7 times.

Under heating, the temperature at which magnetism is lost is called the Curie point. The Curie point of iron is 769℃, the nickel is 358℃, and the cobalt is up to 1150℃. Magnetic steel containing 60% cobalt is 2.5 times stronger than ordinary magnetic steel. Under vibration, generally magnetic steel loses about 1/3 of its magnetic properties, while cobalt steel loses only 2%-3.5%. Obviously, cobalt has an advantage in magnetic materials. In addition, cobalt is widely used in electroplating, glass, dying, medical and medical applications. Besides, cobalt may also be used to make nuclear weapons, a theoretical atomic bomb or hydrogen bomb, which is installed in a cobalt shell. It can turn cobalt into deadly radioactive dust after the explosion.

Wrought Cobalt Chrome Alloy is mainly strengthened by solid solution and carbide. The main types of carbides are MC, M6C, M23C6, M7C3, etc. The bulk MC carbide strengthening effect is not obvious. Carbides (M23C6) located at grain boundaries can prevent grain boundary migration and thus contribute to durable strength. It is shown that the endurance strength of cobalt-based deformation superalloy is lower than that of nickel-based deformation superalloy in the range of low and medium temperature, but it shows higher durability at temperatures above 980℃.
